Re-Opening Update

Re-Opening Update

by Rev. John Weston, SUMC Senior Pastor on May 5, 2021
Today Bishop Elaine Stanovsky released updated restrictions for official United Methdist Covid-19 policy for the Greater Northwest Episcopal Area (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho). As of May 17th, churches will be given the option of making Covid-19 policy for their ministry setting. SUMC's Re-Opening Team will be taking this option and is in preparations to open Great Hall/Gym for worship as early as Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd. The Bishop is still prohibiting indoor singing until further notice.

Our current indoor group size limit is 10 due to Kitsap County's elevated Covid-19 levels over the past month.

Masking and Distancing Will Continue

Masking and 6 foot physical distancing will continue regardless of whether events are outdoors or indoors. We will work within the CDC guidelines as well as Washington State and Kitsap County's parameters. We know there are different perspectives on this, especially with so many of us now vaccinated, there are some folks who still feel very unsafe when people do not keep to these protocols. Can we do this out of love?

Indoor Worship: Great Hall/Gym

We will utilize our largest volume space available for worship in this early phase of indoor worship. If you haven't been in there for a while, it has been painted, the carpets have been thoroughly cleaned, and the room is ready to serve as our camping place for now. We won't be able to sing. But we'll be together.

Outdoor Worship: Parking Lot/Field

The Bishop's new restrictions do allow for outdoor worship WITH SINGING as long as people stay masked and maintain 6 foot household distancing. We are simultaneously working toward this to provide some sweet worship relief this summer. We are looking for a flatbed trailer of at least 20 feet in length. If you have one or know someone who would let us borrow for the summer, please let us know. This will be our portable stage.

Thank You

Thanks for hanging in with us. We are doing everything we can. Please thank the Lord for movement forward and seek his blessing and favor in these next steps. Good things are coming soon!

Psalm 122:1-2 I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD." 2 And now we are standing here inside your gates, O Jerusalem.
